2010 Grant Projects

The Council is pleased to announce the following awards for FFY 2010:

ADVOCACY

Partners in Policymaking is an advocacy and leadership training program for individuals with disabilities and their family members. Training topics cover the legislative process, education, employment, housing, etc. Selected applicants are required to attended one weekend training event per month for 8 months in order to graduate. For more information and an application, please contact the Partners in Policymaking Coordinator at (785)296-1980.

ADVOCACY

KCDD has been a long-term supporter of the Kansas Youth Leadership Forum (YLF) hosted by the Kansas Youth Empowerment Academy. YLF is a 5-day leadership training program for high school juniors and seniors with disabilities. 24 youth with disabilities attended the 2010 YLF.

HEALTH CARE

Oral Health Kansas has engaged in a 3 year project to improve oral health care for adults with developmental disabilities. This objective is met through creation of an annual continuing education seminar and ongoing training initiatives for dental professionals. Statewide onsite and packaged materials designed for individuals with developmental disabilities, family members and support staff on to improve communication with dental professionals, improve oral hygiene and preventative practices. Oral Resource Kits were also provided to each Community Developmental Disability Organization (CDDO.)

EMPLOYMENT

KCDD provided funds to three individuals with developmental disabilities to start their own businesses. Jenny Lu Designs is based in Topeka and features original artwork and print products. Howard Ag Service offers land-clearing and tree removal services in the Fort Scott area. Paws Pleas is based in Lawrence and produces pet treats, toys, clothing and bedding.
